Founder of Shinden Karate
Tommy Morita is the creator of Shinden Karate. He held an
8th Dan in Shorin-ryu, 7th Dan in Chito-ryu and a 2nd Dan in Kendo. He was Big Island boxing champion of 1940 and 1941 and was named Outstanding Boxer of 1941.
Mr. Morita studied Karate and various other
fighting styles in Japan, China and Okinawa. He
dedicated over fifty years of his life to the advanced
study of the martial arts.
It was his belief that such study should be a lifelong
effort in self-improvement and should never be
thought of as a status symbol or be used to display
physical superiority. Mr. Morita believed that the
goal of Karate is, and should always be, to develop
humility, self control, respect for others, mental
awareness and discipline. And that our ultimate aim is
to apply this conduct in our lives outside the dojo.
"Always make Karate work for you."
